HOW TO SELECT THE PERFECT AREA RUG

Area rugs are an essential part of your room décor! Considering the size of the rug in a room in comparison to all the other pieces that can add bling or make a statement, your carpet often times is the most important element in the design. So if you’re looking to treat your space to a new rug, here is what you need to know before you start your shopping:

THE MATERIAL & CONSTRUCTION:

The construction of the rug and what it is made of is the main reason why one rug costs a few hundred dollars and another costs thousands. In general, synthetic materials like olefin, polyester and polypropylene tend to be on the cheaper side. On the higher end, you will find animal fibers such as wool, leather and silk. As for the construction, the longer it takes to make a rug, the more expensive it gets. As a result, machine made ones are on the lower scale while the hand knotted ones are your top of the line. In fact, the material and the construction of a rug affect its longevity and this is why some rugs last only a couple of years while others can last for a lifetime.

SIZE & PLACEMENT:

The rule of thumb here is that the rug should be about 2-3 feet away from each wall. However, appropriate rug size should be determined based on furniture configuration and not on room size alone. In the old days, people used to have huge rugs that extended beyond the back of the furniture. If you’re going with a super traditional theme, you can still get away with this. In the new school of design, the rug can be inches away from the furniture or going under the front legs of it. But, the rug should never be smaller than the sofa. For instance, if your sofa is 7’, you can’t use a 4’x6’ rug but the 5’x8’ might work. As for the dining room, make sure that all legs of the chairs go on the carpet. Here are some examples of do’s and don’ts:

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX:

It is true that rectangular shape is the most common for area carpets, but this doesn’t mean that you are limited to it. Some rugs are available in square, round, oval and other funky shapes. These ones can make your room feel dynamic and unique. Another great trend to consider when deciding on an area rug is layering. This basically means placing a small patterned rug on top of a bigger rug. The bottom rug can be plain or have a less busy pattern than the top one. This technique is gaining lots of popularity because it makes the space look richer in elements and more inviting.  Examples? Here you go:
